Horses in the 1800s

What Jobs did horses have?

In the 1800s horses had many different jobs. One of the most common jobs for horses was transportation.  Not only did people just ride horses, they used something called horse power. Transportation is not the only job horses did. Some horses helped farmers on their fields. Instead of dragging a plow around by themselves farmers used horses to plow their fields for them. It helped farming get done faster. Sometimes horses were used for even road making, ice cutting, and occasionally helped blacksmiths with their work.

 What is Horsepower?

Horsepower was very important in the 1800s. Horsepower meant that it was a horse pulling or helping the machine work. Horsepower is occasionally used today. In forests the horses would pull heavy loads, often to big or heavy for a human. Some people prefer horsepower over tractors because horses are fun to work with and do not hurt the environment. Usually today horsepower is not with an actual horse. A piece of machinery will have a certain amount of power to it also known as horsepower.
